MEDIA LITERACY

Media literacy is the set of knowledge, skills and practices that enable individuals to actively and responsibly engage with media in three interconnected ways: production, consumption, and participation.

As producers, media-literate individuals should learn how to create content that is clear, ethical, and creative. They develop the skills to use digital tools, storytelling techniques, and communication strategies to share their voices while considering issues such as accuracy, representation, and social responsibility.

As consumers, individuals are equipped to access and analyse the wide variety of messages they encounter every day – from news articles and advertisements to films and social media posts. This involves questioning sources, identifying bias, understanding representation, and reflecting on how media shapes beliefs, behaviours, and worldviews.

Finally, as participants, individuals contribute meaningfully to public dialogue, collaborate with others, and use media to take part in civic, cultural, and social life. Participation highlights the importance of respect, empathy, and accountability in online and offline communities.

Together, these three dimensions – production, consumption, and participation – make media literacy essential for active citizenship, personal empowerment, and lifelong learning in the 21st century.
